Romeo and Juliet BLOG ASSIGNMENT #2

From ACT IV, scene 3: Before Juliet takes the potion prepared by Friar Laurence, Juliet seems fearful; what is she afraid of? Explain your response with support from the text.

  1. Juliet seems fearful because she is afraid that Friar Laurence might possibly be setting her up. The Friar was the one who secretly married her and Romeo, and only the Nurse, Romeo and Juliet are the ones who know that they are married. The Friar might reveal this when she would be marrying Paris, and Capulet might disown Juliet.

  2. I think she was fearful because she doubted whether the potion would work or not. maybe she thought it would actually kill her instead of making her seem dead.

  3. Juliet begins to fret before she takes the potion, because she starts doubting the Friars true purpose behind this act of kindness. She begins to wonder: "Hey, maybe this vial is actually poisen; a poisen that would take my life, in order to cover up the Friars dishonorable marriage between Romeo and I..." She then came to the conclusion that the Friar could be setting her up for his own profit.
    (wa-wa-waaaaa!):P

  4. Whoops! I spelled 'poison' wrong... Sorry Mrs. Headrick!

  5. Juliet is fearful that the Friar had tricked her, and given her real poison, that would kill her. The Friar had promised her that the poison would only give her the appearance of death. The Friar married her and Romeo, and could be killing her off to avoid a punishment.

  6. Juliet grows fearful before taking the potion the Friar has given her because she is unsure of the Friar's intentions and she is scared of the consequences. The "what ifs" begin to emerge in her mind. Juliet grows scared because she starts thinking about the huge sacrifice she is making along with the possibilty that she might be getting scammed in the process.

  7. Juliet is fearful of two things either Friar had given her a real poison that would kill her. Or the poison the Friar had given her that would given her the appearance of death wouldn't work. She said if it didn't work she would commit suicide. Another way to look at it is the Friar could put real poison in the vial so he wouldn't have to deal with his decision in secretly marring Romeo and Juliet.

  8. Juliet is afraid that Friar Laurence is lying to her about the potion. She is afraid that he has either given her a fake potion or that will kill her. Juliet beleives Friar Laurence may have given her a deadly potion because if anyone finds out that he had married Romeo and Juliet, then the Friar would be banished. If Juliet died, then Friar Laurence would not have to worry about her telling anyone about the marriage. Juliet says, "What if it be a poison, which the Friar subtly hath ministered to have me dead,". If he had given Juliet a fake potion, then she would probably suffocate in the tomb while waiting for Romeo. She says, "How if, when I am laid in the tomb, I wake before the time that Romeo come to redeem me!...Shall I not then be stifled in the vault...and there die strangled ere my Romeo comes?"

  10. Good comments. I agree with the reasoning of her fears of Friar Laurence's intentions. Now look beyond this reasoning. Why else would she be fearful?

  11. She was worried about friars intentions because he didn't want anyone to find out that he had married romeo and juliet. To maybe get off the hook he could of given her a poisonous potion. Juliet was frightened because of this and ended up taking the potion anyway.

  12. Juliet was worried that the Friar was setting her up, and she would not wake up to find Romeo at her side. Or, perhaps, he intended on killing her.

  13. Another reason Juliet was afraid was that she might wake up in the tomb and Romeo would not be there. It would be extremely creepy to wake up in a room with a bunch of dead bodies, especially if she wouldn't be able to leave without someone helping her. She could be "stifled" in the vault before Romeo came.

  14. I believe she was fearful of a few things.
1.She doubted if the Friar was trustworthy and he is not trying to kill her.
2.She hoped that the potion actually worked.
3.The tomb is a little creepy and I wouldn't want to wake up in a tomb full of dead, smelly people.
4.What if no one comes? Will she be locked in the tomb forever?
    5. It might have also have run through her mind that she was betraying her whole family. They're family, and it's hard to go agianst someone you have loved your whole life.
    6. Did she really want to give up everything, even her identiy? It' kinda of a big decision. Once you start you can't go back.

The Friar might have poisened her because he did not want to be found out. If he were found out he would be banished.

  15. I think that Juliet was afraid that Friar's potion was going to kill her not put her to sleep. Juliet was worried about more than one thing. She was worried that Romeo would not come and save her. She might of been afraid that someone would never find out that she faked death. Also what would her family think of what she did. There was a lot of things to think over. She had a big decision to make. Juliet has to think that Friar and the Nurse are the only two that know about the wedding and Juliet might be worried that Friar and the Nurse would tell the families that they got married behind their backs. She might be worried that wehen she woke up Romeo would be killed by her father and then she would be killed also.

  16. I think Juliet was fearful of Friar. He had alot of power in the situation and had the ability to set Juliet up. But think about it... I would be really scared too at the thought of waking up in a morgue(sorr I can't spell) full of my dead family members.Awkward...
I think she was also afraid at the entire plan in itself. Friar thought of a plan out of no where which is not promising. There were many places in their plan where things could go wrong and they did. Romeo never got the letter which lead him to suicide( no suprise for emotional Romeo) and lead Juliet to being really really dead in the end.

  17. There is no doubt that fear sets in amongst Juliet's thoughts. It says on pg. 189 "What if this mixture do not work at all?" This is the first fear she has, there fear of failure. She does not know as to whether or not the poison will work. She is fearful that she will have to get married the following day. A few lines down from the original quote it says, " What if it be a poison, which the Friar subtly hat ministered to have me dead..." This is her second fear, that the good Friar gave her an actual poison to, in words, correct what he has already done. There is even a third fear, she is fearful that she will not be moved to the Capulet Tomb in time for Romeo to get there and retrieve her. She thinks that her family may not move her there in time, therefore exposing her plan when she awakes.

  18. This is a pretty by the book question. It doesn't requiter any real thinking or opinion drawing.(It's not personal, I'm just still angry about all the complements i got on my last comment.) There is only one true answer that everyone will come to. that's why all the comments above are so simpler. I real could just copy and paste the best points from each answer an that'd be about the same answer I'd come up with on my own. Instead, I'm going to create my own more personal question. Sure I might loose point's, but does it look like I care? of course it doesn't, because you can't see me.
My question is: What would you do in Juliet's position?

  19. Good question Michael! If I was Juliet I know I would chicken out. I just wouldn't be able to follow through with possible killing myself. Instead I would escape. I would try to get to Romeo in where ever he is, and if I got caught, I would use the poison as a last resort. The person who caught me would think that I killed myself, and put me in the tomb and the plans would continue as if I had never tried to escape.

  20. If I were Juliet, I would be terrified of taking the potion. I would be afraid that Friar Lawrence would be tricking me because he was not happy about marrying Romeo and Juliet. On page 189, she says she is fearful that her family will not take her in time and then her whole plan of marrying Romeo would be ruined.

  21. There were many things racing through Juliet's mind the night she took the potion. (visions of dancing sugarplum faries was not one of them
) On page 189, she goes through everything that could go wrong. She covers everything from losing the friar's trust to waking up at the wrong time.

P.S. GRANT COHOE ... is awesome

  22. Juliet has many things going through her head. she believes the Friar Lawrence would lie to her to escape the punishment of marrying Romeo and Juliet in secret. she is afraid that the potion might actually kill her instead of getting put to a 2 day death. Though right before she drinks it she says, "Lord, Give me strength!"

  23. I think Juliet was fearful that the Friar gave her real poison, or the potion wouldn't work. Also that she might wake up before Friar Lawerence and Romeo got there and be stuck in the tomb with a bunch of dead people.

  24. I think that Juliet was fearful for many reasons. I think one reason she was afraid was she thought that Friar Lawrence had actually given her a potion that would kill her. She thought this when she said "What if it be a poison, which Friar subtly hath ministered to have me dead" on page 189. She thought that he would kill her because if people found out that he married Romeo and Juliet, he would be in big trouble. She was also thinking to herself "What if the potion does not even work and the whole plan is ruined?" If the plan is ruined then her and Romeo are exposed and everyone involved could be in danger. The second reason that I think she was fearful was because she was worried that Romeo would truly think she was dead. She imagined that she would not wake up and find him waiting there for her and that worried her. Juliet was probably creeped out about the whole situation too. Think about it, she has to wake up in tomb full of dead people and after that, she has to run away because no one knows that she's alive. That would be a very scary situation to be in!! She probably was afraid of "losing" her identity too, due to the fact that she was supposed to be dead. Juliet was scared to drink the potion but she drank it anyways, and all for true love.

  26. Oh yeah, and I think that the time's wrong under the comments becuase it is 9:50 pm (I got home really late haha) right now but it says like 6:50. :]

  27. I think the main reason was that Juliet was afraid of killing herself. I don't think she really wanted to marry Paris since she was in love with Romeo so much that she would kill herself. I think the whole plan was a little fishy to her. Die and then wake up to find Romeo by her side, then run away to some far away town??? Even if the plan had worked out as planned everyone would have wondered where Romeo was. Even the Capulets would have wondered why Juliet died and then Romeo disappered within about 24 hours after they knew they were hanging out a lot. Some of this might have gone through her mind and she realized she would be banished if anyone found out.

  28. Before Juliet takes the poison to make herself seem dead she wonders wether the Friar has set her up or not. She is worried that he wishes to kill her so the towns people will not know that he is the one who married her to Romeo. Juliet directly says her fears during the night, "What if it be a poison, which the friar subtly hath minister'd to have me dead,Lest in this marriage he should be dishonour'd, Because he married me before to Romeo? I fear it is: and yet, methinks, it should not, For he hath still been tried a holy man".

  29. Juliet was afraid that the friar was going to kill her. He was initially against the marriage. At this time, it seems that things are getting out of control so he might want to off Juliet to get rid of the evidence of hi unpopular decision.

  30. Juliet was obviously scared because she didn't want to die. The Friar said the poison wasn't supposed to kill her, but she didn't know for sure. She was also suspicious of the Friar's own agenda. He married Romeo and Juliet and methinks he regretted doing so. The Montagues and Capulets would have had him for it. I think he was a holy man turning into a mob boss (Were in Italy!), killing the people who knew about what he did.

  31. Eddie's post is especially good since it draws on specific references from the play. And since Freddie doesn't want compliments, none he saw get. But I would like to know what everyone would do in Juliet or Romeo's positions. Next week's blog?
